Mex knew that if he showed his anger at this news, the bank would call the police and everything
would start to unravel. He took a deep breath. ‘I am sorry; I asked my deputy to make that transfer
and forgot to tell him it was cancelled. Would you have the bank details and address for Stepan, I
obviously need to speak with him?’
The manager nodded to Bright. ‘Charles will escort you to the clients lounge Mr. Alladyce where
there is always fresh coffee. In the meanwhile, I will contact the Manhattan Bank and get those
details for you. It shouldn’t take too long.’
Andrew Blair walked upstairs to Mr. Darrow’s office and explained the situation.
‘All right Andrew, wait here and I will give George a ring.’ He rang the number he had been given, it
was answered quickly.
‘Hello George. I do not know what you were expecting on this Property Investment account of
yours but It seems the total of your balance, six million two hundred and eighty three thousand
one hundred and eighty five dollars has been transferred to an account in New York. The recipient
is a Stepan Chernetsky. The only person who would deal with your account is a young chap by
name Charles Bright and he has no knowledge of the transfer. Obviously if he had then he would
have brought it to the attention of Andrew or me as instructed. I can only think we may have had a
couple of your friends drop in on us over the Bank Holiday.
We have an American gentleman waiting in our lounge. He holds confirmation of his identity as
Edward Alladyce, your alias on this account, and has tried to withdraw the balance, which of course
is now zero. He also wishes me to give him the address details of this Stepan Chernetsky. It is
unlikely the bank in New York will divulge this. Should I ring the police?’
‘No, everything is in order, just wait a moment.’ George checked the file for Mick Hagley’s address.
Would you please ask Andrew to pass this on as Stepan Chernetsky’s address and thank you for
ringing, Torquil. I think that will probably be the finish of that account. I will pop by and settle with
you soon.’

George had received two calls now, one from the bank and an earlier call from Viktor Balandin
‘I think you should be aware that I have opened an account in Manhattan for Günter Bauman in the
name of Stepan Chernetsky.’
th
‘Thank you Viktor. I presume you still have him under close observation in East 37 Street?’
‘Yes, of course. He rarely leaves the apartment.’
‘Well, keep very tight, he may make a move soon but remember, whatever occurs, do not
intervene. It is only a watching brief.’
George had then telephoned Gregor.
