PART THREE

                            TH
            MONDAY MAY 4 1998
Oliver Stroud, despite his posh sounding name, was a Bermondsey boy and he clearly had not
forgotten what he had learnt in his youth. He had the door to TA Darrow’s bank opened in a matter
of minutes. He beckoned to me and Stanley, his alarms system man, and we left the shadows of a
shop doorway and crossed over to join him. Stanley pushed the door open, threw in his small
holdall and jumped into the bank.

‘Both of you stand here and don’t move.’

Oliver and I did as ordered.

‘You are standing on a pressure plate. As soon as you move the weight will come off and the alarm
will sound. If you don’t move for forty seconds the alarm will sound anyway but that should give me
            plenty of time.’

Stanley disappeared into the darkness and seemed to take an eternity. I checked my watch but
Oliver murmured, ‘Don’t worry, Stanley did a survey.’

‘A survey, how did he manage that?’

‘He opened an account but closed it the next day before the cheque could be cleared. They only
cater for millionaires here. It gave him enough time to recognise the alarm system.’

Stanley reappeared. ‘OK. You can come in now.’

Oliver entered a small reception room, which contained a desk with a computer upon it.

‘I’ll use this one. He turned the computer on. I have to find the password first. Stanley noticed they

only use numbers as passwords so this number generator should do the trick. He plugged a small
battery operated box into the computer and turned it on. The L.E.D screen showed numbers
rotating at a fast rate and eventually, ‘Eureka. I told you their security wouldn’t be up to much.’

Then a little later, ‘Right. I’ve found the London Property Invest account where is it to go to?’

                                                          *****

                               TH
            WEDNESDAY MAY 6 1998
Mex moved among the aisles supposedly browsing the bookshelves but concentrating on the girl at
the desk. He had been in the library nearly half an hour and his usual contact had not appeared. If
he didn’t choose a book soon he would start to look suspicious. Mex had anticipated another
directive this time, he presumed, to receive instructions on how to pass the money on to an

operational department. He made up his mind; he would have to check if the girl at the desk was a
different contact. If she were not then he would just have to leave and try again tomorrow.
