For distribution of water to consumers, a pipe network will be laid. The pipe
network is normally laid underground by the road sides. The reason :
1. less obstruction
2. eases pipe installation and maintenance
3. reduces operational cost.
Piping system includes network of pipes and valves, which are:
Main pipe Pipe that delivers water from treatment plant to distribution
tank or directly to distribution area. Water can be delivered
directly to distribution area without storage tank, if treatment
plant is located at a higher level from distribution area. The
length of main pipe depends on the distance of water needed to
be supplied.
Feeder pipe Directly connected to a main pipe for distribution of water to
industrial or residential areas.
Branch pipe A branch of pipes from a feeder pipe to individual house, building,
factory or fire hydrant. A meter is assembled to the pipe to
measure consumption rate of water by the consumers.
Valve to control water flow rate, stop water flow, release trapped air in
pipe, balance pressure in pipe and remove effluents in the pipe.
