FOREWORD
The civil servants featured in this 2019 Golden Edition of Profiles have
earned our nation’s admiration and respect. Personally, and as Chairman of
the House Committee on Oversight and Reform, I welcome this opportunity
to express my gratitude to them – and to each of you – who has served our
nation and her people with such selfless distinction.
Allow me to share with you a deeply held conviction. There is no vocation
more noble and rewarding than a career in public service. As a nation,
therefore, it is only fair and just that we should return service for service given
– doing all that we can to give public servants (and the retired federal
employees whom this Association so ably represents) a fair shake.
Please know that I will never waiver in my own commitment – of more than
two decades – to establishing a renewed social contract with our civil service
that includes at least four key national obligations:
(1) To keep our promises to active and retired federal employees;
(2) To be fair to you and your families;
(3) To act with compassion and common sense in protecting your health
and welfare; and
(4) To never falter in giving those of you who have devoted your lives to
our welfare the respect that you have earned and deserve.
Thank you.
Congressman Elijah E. Cummings (MD07)
Chairman, Oversight and Reform
U.S. House of Representatives
