transcription was done in no time. I received a call that the translation was
very professional and the exhibit was approved. This is one of the outstanding
highlights of my federal career.
I am David Langley and I served in the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the
Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) for 38 years. I held many positions
in my long career with FSIS. I started at a GS-5 Food Inspector, became a
Compliance Officer in the Midwest, Staff Officer in Washington, D.C., District
Enforcement Manager in the Southeast, and held a couple of Branch Chief
positions again in Washington D.C., before retiring.
Most of my career involved regulatory enforcement of meat, poultry and egg
inspection laws and regulations. I proudly worked to ensure the safe delivery
of meat, poultry and egg food products to consumers across the U.S. and
abroad. Throughout my career, I worked cooperatively with many State and
local officials to ensure food safety to all citizens.
Toward the end of my career, I worked for FSIS in the Information
Technology (IT) area. I played a key role in development of a system (The
In-Commerce System, ICS), which tracks and maintains enforcement actions
taken by FSIS against violators of the Federal Meat and Poultry Inspection
Acts. I ended my career as a Branch Chief in FSIS’s Office of Chief
Information Officer (OCIO). In that position, I was involved in many aspects
of IT, including budget, procurement, contracts, communications, IT policy, all
in support of what I call the “backbone” of the agency. That is, the folks like
inspectors and investigators who toil each day to inspect and ensure a safe
food supply for our nation and the world.
I had many highlights in my career but the thing I’m most proud of was just
the opportunity to make a difference in people’s lives. I used to visit shopping
malls, looking at shoppers, and feeling a sense of satisfaction that, along with
many others in FSIS, I had a hand in keeping food safe for the general public.
We are indeed lucky to have the world’s best food inspection system, second
to none. That could only be accomplished by the hard work of many dedicated
Public Servants who work for our nation.
I am Marylin Pierre and I served in the Department of Agriculture in 1989
during the George H. Bush Administration. I worked as a legal assistant in the
Office of the General Counsel. During that time, I worked with the committee
