loans, the school’s accessibility to low-income students,
and their ability to hold down costs. The government
will tie federal funds to the ratings. Consequently,
authorities are imposing funding models that take into
account performance measures related to student
outcomes.
Some measures included in these funding models
are the number of students earning one or more awards
in a given academic year, the number of students from
undeserved populations who receive an award, and the
number of students who complete a degree within six
years of starting college.
Donald Trump has been a victim of the war
against private universities. Trump University was an
American for-profit education company that ran a real
estate training program from 2005 until 2010. The
Trump Organization owned and operated Trump U. The
business changed its name to The Trump Entrepreneur
Initiative in 2010, after New York State Education
Department pressured it to stop calling itself a
university.
President Trump intended the university to be a
money making venture, but more importantly, he meant
it to be a showpiece. Some students complained that
they failed to get high paying jobs to pay off their
massive student debt. A judge approved an agreement
for President Trump to pay $25 million to settle
lawsuits paying 3,730 people 90 percent of their money
back.
The Tenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution
reads “The powers not delegated to the United States by
the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are
