global temperature rise this century well
below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-
industrial levels and to pursue efforts to
limit the temperature increase even
further to 1.5 degrees Celsius.”
In 2015, the Representatives of 195 countries
agreed to lower planet-warming greenhouse gas
emissions, which changed the dynamics of international
cooperation. Candidate Trump noted that the Paris
Accord gave “foreign bureaucrats control over how
much energy we use.” He recognized that this accord
could undermine his plans to rejuvenate the U.S.
economy, so on June 1, 2017, he announced he would
withdraw the U.S. from the agreement. He gave the
following reasons:
1. It makes it difficult for the United States to
compete with other countries.
2. It means lost jobs, lower wages, shuttered
factories and diminished production.
3. It frees the U.S. from financing the very
expensive Green Climate Fund.
4. American households would have several
thousands of dollars in lost income and a greatly
diminished quality of life.
5. It fails to live up to America’s environmental
ideals by punishing the United States, while
transferring wealth to other nations.
