George Orwell, in his book Animal Farm, set out
to show how power corrupts, no matter how noble the
intent. In his book, a group of animals centralizes
control over the farm to ensure equality. The novel ends
with the barnyard commandments, high on their
righteousness, reducing the commandments to only one,
which is: “All animals are equal, but some animals are
more equal than others.”
The book illustrates that power corrupts and
absolute power corrupts absolutely. Millionaires,
healthcare providers, energy companies, political
groups, and other politically favored groups are the
most equal. The point of the book is that as the
government grows, so too will inequality.

GOVERNMENT PROGRAMS

Americans had tamed the frontier by the last

quarter of the 19 century; they built cities, grew
businesses, and established a country, but not all
citizens shared in the wealth. The Progressive
Movement highlighted the deficiencies in the economic
system. The modern Progressive Movement has
impacted education, health care, tax policies and other
federal programs.
