Who Compiled The Original Pesach Haggadah? ‐ Natanya Ruben (8th)

We don't exactly know who compiled the original haggadah, but there are several different theories about who
may have assembled it. According to Rabbi Yosef Chayim the Haggadah was compiled during the mishnaic and
talmudic period. But, it was probably not written before the times of Rabbi Yehuda bar Elai, who was the last
Tanna to be quoted in the Haggadah. In Pesachim 116a, the Talmud makes a statement about who compiled the
Haggadah including the name “Rav Nachman.” There is an argument whether the “Rav Nachman” that was
mentioned was Rav Nachman bar Yaakov (280 CE) or Rav Nachman bar Yitzchak (360 CE.)

The Malbim and other commentators believe that people who were interpreting Rav Nachman’s Talmudic state-
ment weren’t talking about the compilation, rather the interpretation. So it could have been completed before
         that.

According to this explanation the Haggadah was written during the time of Rav Yehuda HaNasi (200 CE,) the
compiler of the Mishna. From this, the Malbim says that Rav Yehuda HaNasi himself compiled the Haggadah.

Who Wrote the Haggadah? ‐ Alina Gold ine (6th Grade)

The Haggadah is sort of like a history book that every year the Jewish people read at the Passover Seder. The
Haggadah contains information on the exodus of the Jewish people from 210 years of slavery, but the real ques-
tion is who wrote the Haggadah? Who was in Egypt to record the story? The answer to this question is stated is
in the Malbim which says that nobody actually knows who wrote the Haggadah. Some say that Rabbi Yehuda
Hanasi ,the author of the Mishna, wrote the Haggadah. Others say that Anshei Knesset Hagedolah, who already
authored a formal Haggadah including Torah verses, wrote the Haggadah.
