Four Cups of Wine ‐ Gali Hampel (6th Grade)
Our Sages tell us that the reason we drink wine at the Pesach Seder, is because wine is a drink of royalty. We
envision ourselves as kings and queens as we recreate Bnei Yisrael leaving Mitzrayim as a free nation, with the
ability to serve Hashem. If one does not have wine for the four cups is there another possible substitute? Rabbi
Shimon Eider writes that if one has no wine or grape juice, than one may use tea or coffee instead. These drinks
are considered important as they are not used to quench ones thirst, as opposed to water or soda which are inva-
lid. When we drink the four cups at the Seder, we should not take our ability to drink wine for granted as per-
haps some may not be able to afford wine or grape juice.
