Have everything handy before you get started – pots or
containers with adequate drainage and the right depth for the plants
you’re growing, compost/potting soil, seeds, watering can.
Decide which plants you want to grow and know their
requirements then place plants with similar moisture and sun needs
in the same container.
You’ll be surprized at what you can grow in containers.
Ideal candidates for container gardens are
leaf and head lettuces,
spinach,
green bush beans do well in containers as small as 8" deep and
8" wide per plant. The big seeds of the beans are easy for the kids to
handle.
peppers (may require staking)
onions,
radishes can be grown quickly and easily even if you have the
smallest container
tomatoes (larger plants require staking)
Try growing a few of your beans out of the ground so the kids can watch
them grow. To do this you’ll need your bean seeds, a jar, some paper
towels or napkins and water.
Instructions
- Swirl a small amount of water around the jar.
- Fold your napkin or paper towels, dampen them and place in the jar.
- Place the bean seed in the jar resting on the napkin.
- Spray some water on the bean every few days.
The bean should start to grow roots after a few days.
Try growing some carrots in containers with varieties like:
