Some things to consider –
Different plants have different needs for sunlight. Those that
need full sun include tomatoes, squash, beans, eggplant, corn, and
peppers, while those less dependent on the sun are leafy vegetables,
potatoes, carrots, and turnips.
When choosing what to put where, remember to place taller
plants on the north side of your plot to prevent their shadows from
blocking the sunlight to shorter plants.
It’s a good idea to mark your rows so you know where
everything is growing (or make a little garden map marking where you
planted everything. A map is a good addition to your garden journal).
Here’s some simple, cheap and cute methods for making garden markers
Materials for Making Rock Garden Markers
– smooth medium-sized rocks
– tempera, gouache or acrylic paints
– outdoor varnish
Have your child paint the rocks with solid colours.
Gouache is non-toxic, washable and has good covering properties. For
older kids, which can handle the paint better, acrylic paints are better.
Paint the rocks to match the color of the vegetables example: Orange for
carrots, green for lettuce and peas, red for beets.
After the rocks dry add some drawings to symbolize the plants they
represent.
Have fun with them like giving them silly faces.
The last step of the project is to varnish the stones, protecting them against
moisture. Do it in a well-ventilated area giving the stones two or three
coats.
