P. 24
1. Using a pocket knife to carve a pointed "hat" (see image) at the top of
one end of a twig. Some help may be needed on this part for younger
children. Remember to teach safe knife handling before starting.
2. Carve a rounded, flat "face" on one side of the twig. (see image)
3. Carve a rounded, flat area on the bottom part of the stick (see image).
This is where you will write the names of your plants with perma marker.
4. Paint your gnomes' hats and beards with craft paint in any color you
choose!
5. Let dry completely then write the veggie names onto the bottom part of
the twigs with a permanent marker.
Simplified Twig Plant Marker
Similar to the gnome stick markers just much simpler and no knife involved.
1. Gather up some small branches, about 1/4 to 1/2 inch around.
2. With a vegetable peeler, strip a couple of inches of bark at one end,
making a flat surface, and use permanent marker to record the name.
Note: If the wood is green and oozing sap, let it dry overnight before
writing.
Even simpler yet use recycled popsicle sticks or plastic fork for markers.
