Exposure to and/or contraction of a communicable disease (e.g. TB exposure, needle-stick injury)
WSIB Reporting Steps
Promptly obtain first aid (staff at SJHC who need to see a doctor urgently should go to the Emergency
Department) as needed;
Immediately report the incident to your manager. See a doctor or other qualified practitioner, if
required;
Complete and promptly return all forms received from the Occupational Health and Safety department
& WSIB.
Incidents/Accidents & Exposures
If you experience either of the situations below you must report to the Emergency Department within 1-2
hours:
If you have sustained a needle-stick or other injury with a contaminated sharps object.
If you have had a mucous membrane or skin exposure to blood or bodily fluids (e.g. splash to eyes).
For any other injury/accident or exposure that may occur while you are on site, please use your judgment to
seek the most appropriate level of care.
Reporting Workplace injury and illness.
If you have any of the following, stay at home and follow the corresponding guidelines:
1.) Acute onset of vomiting or diarrhea—you must remain off until symptom-free for 24 or 48 hours
2.) Acute febrile respiratory illness including flu or flu-like symptoms—you are expected to take your
temperature at least twice a day and to remain off until you have been afebrile for 24 hours and feel
well enough to resume placement activities.
If you become sick with any of the above while on site at St. Joseph’s, inform your manager immediately. Staff
are to leave the department and seek appropriate medical care which may include: going to see your family
physician; contacting the Occupation Health and Safety Department at SJHC; contacting Telehealth Ontario (1-
866-797-0000); contacting your local public health agency; or seeking care at the Emergency Department.
You will require clearance from your manager to return to your work.
For your reference, signs and symptoms of Influenza-like illness are as follows:
sudden onset of fever greater than 38 degrees C
new or worse cough or shortness of breath with one or more of the following:
o headache
o sore throat
o arthralgia (joint pain)
o myalgia (muscle pain)
o fatigue/complete physical exhaustion
