Lions are close relatives to the tiger, leopard, snow leopard and jaguar and only these big cats can
roar. There are two types of lion, the African lion and the Asian lion. The African lion has seven
subspecies where the Asian lion only one.
African lion
Barbary lion also known as the North African lion
The barbary lion is extinct in the wild. They used to roam freely in Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco and
Algeria but today there is only a small number of them in the Rabat zoo in Morocco. The Barbary lion
is the largest sub-specie and weigh more than 200kg and a length of 298-329cm.
West African lion also known as the Senegal lion
The Senegal lion is critically endangered and is the smallest sub-specie where the male lion weigh
160-190kg and the female lion weight 110-120kg. They are found in western Africa from Central
African Republic to Senegal.
