                                                                                                                                   First edition of this esteemed work containing the biographies of Italian 17th centu-
                                                                                                                                   ry  artists,  excluding  living  people.  Considered  the  first  great  work  of  Italian  artistic
                                                                                                                                   historiography of the eighteenth century. There is an interesting change of emphasis
                                                                                                                                   between the first and second volumes. In the first, Pascoli praises modernity and ge-
                                                                                                                                   nius and admires the fecundity of the seventeenth century artists, while in the second
                                                                                                                                   volume he warns about the dangers of imagination and recommends following the an-
                                                                                                                                   cients. The material collected here by Pascoli is of the utmost importance and, although
                                                                                                                                   you should review carefully, it received favorable and even flattering judgments since
                                                                                                                                   its publication. Lione Pascoli (1674–1744) was an avid art collector, he amassed a large
                                                                                                                                   collection of paintings, mostly from contemporary living authors and battle scenes.
