The two books by Nicolas Ramos dedicated to the Council of Trent (1545-1563) and
the ecumenical synods, bound in an important period Spanish artistic binding made
for an member of the Inquisition, maybe for the General Inquisitor Gaspar de Quiroga.
Issues relating to the printing of Bibles are especially discussed here. The two parts are
published in different cities and on different dates, which makes it difficult to see them
together in a single volume. Nicolas Ramos (1531-1599) was a minority friar and at the
time guardian and professor of Theology in the convent of San Francisco de Valladolid,
as well as qualifier of the Holy Office; in 1588 he was appointed bishop of Puerto Rico
and in 1592 archbishop of Santo Domingo. The work, dedicated to the Inquisitor Gener-
al Gaspar de Quiroga, is written from conservative positions against Jews and Judaizers,
such as Pagnino or Vatablo. The intention of the Council Fathers was not to condemn
the LXX book version nor the Hebrew originals, but to establish that the Vulgate Bible
should be preferred over the Latin versions.
