FIRST GREAT WORK OF ITALIAN ARTISTIC HISTORIOGRAPHY OF THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY
            15. PASCOLI, Lione. Vite de Pittori, Scultori, ed Architetti Moderni. Roma, Antonio de
            Rossi, 1730-1736. 2 volumes. 4to (250 x 190)mm. -I: (24), 330, (6) pp. -II: (16), 560,
            (6) pp. Titles printed in red and black. Contemporary half calf. 3500 € / US$ $4,080

First edition of this esteemed work containing the biographies of Italian 17th centu-
ry artists, excluding living people. Considered the first great work of Italian artistic
historiography of the eighteenth century. There is an interesting change of emphasis
between the first and second volumes. In the first, Pascoli praises modernity and ge-
nius and admires the fecundity of the seventeenth century artists, while in the second
volume he warns about the dangers of imagination and recommends following the an-
cients. The material collected here by Pascoli is of the utmost importance and, although
you should review carefully, it received favorable and even flattering judgments since
its publication. Lione Pascoli (1674–1744) was an avid art collector, he amassed a large
collection of paintings, mostly from contemporary living authors and battle scenes.
