The school is located in Diepkloof zone 2, within a human living space. The place is
partially developed, there is electricity, fast transportation, shops and markets close
by. As a result of this there is a culture of late coming, learners’ turn to relax since the
school is close to their homes. Some even attempt to skip classes after break. To curb
this, the management tries to keep the gate locked for order and safety reasons.
The social foundation of the school is moulded by the history of South Africa and
South African townships. Most learners in the school twist their languages to some
local dialect called “tsotsitaal”. This is a vernacular derived from a variety of mixed
languages mainly spoken in the townships of Gauteng province such as Soweto. It is
also spoken in other parts of South Africa. Most learners carry their cell phones to
school, smoke marijuana during school hours, walk and dress up like “tsotsies”.
Historically, a “tsotsi” is a young South African black gangster belonging to a group
prominent in the 1940s and 1950s, affecting a special language and flashy dress. We
believe that this has had a negative influence on the school’s order and functioning.
Most learners wear their uniform in the most disorderly way and believe it is style
because they are living a “Tsotsi” lifestyle. It has also become difficult for most to learn
and be taught in English because they are already used to the local dialect being their
way of life.
The school is arranged in a conventional way, the administration office is the first
