Board at Youth Theatre Interactions, Inc. (Y.T.I.); an afterschool performing arts program servicing
inner city youth located in downtown Yonkers. Genia is enjoying retirement and travels as often as
she can. She and her husband Tom will celebrate 35 wonderful years of marriage this year. She is a
proud mother of four sons, all of whom are accomplished professionals, who also readily give back to
their communities. This is proof of Genia’s life: To Whom much is given, much is required!
CALDWELL TEMPLE A.M.E. ZION CHURCH
ESSIE CARRINGTON
Essie Carrington of Caldwell Temple A.M.E. Zion Church was born in New York City
and lived in Sunbury N.C. during her early years. She attended George Washington
High School, Hunter and City colleges. She received her nursing degree from
Hunter College. Essie married Hugh Carrington in 1962. They became the proud
parents of three sons and one adopted daughter. From these children she
boasts of five granddaughters, two grandsons and one great granddaughter.
Sister Carrington worked as an RN in Harlem Hospital for many years. She
spent most of her time in the Emergency department. She also worked in the
Intensive Care and post surgery care units. She has also worked for the New
York City Mission Society in the capacities of camp nurse and Program Director.
Mrs. Carrington served as chaplain in her section of the National Council of Negro Women. She served
as secretary for the Bereavement Consortium of Central Harlem where she served as a Grief
companion. Essie holds a certificate in Perimortem Care for the Dying, and their grieving Families.
She has volunteered in the hospice units of several hospitals. Sister Carrington's favorite activities
are spending time with her family, reading, shopping at Barnes and Nobel, watching Jeopardy, Wheel
of Fortune and NCIS on TV. Essie joined Caldwell in 1968. She presently serves as president of the
W.H.O.M.S., and the Lay Council, of which she was recently awarded the position of District Chaplain
of the Lay Council, she is also an active participant in Class 2 where she presently serves as secretary.
The Missionary Department has adopted a women and children shelter as our outreach project for the
past several years. This past Christmas we were able to provide gifts for the 14 mothers and we were
able to provide 19 children with toys, clothes and baby blankets. Essie teaches Children's Church and
sometimes Adult Sunday School. Her life's theme is Proverbs 3:6 " In all thy ways acknowledge him,
and he shall direct thy paths. (KJV)
SHAW A.M.E. ZION CHURCH
RUTH YOUNG
Ruth Young is a native New Yorker and a lifelong member of the African Methodist Episcopal
Zion Church. Her passion since a youth has been service to God and the Church. Her
mother, Mrs. Lucille Johnson Massiah, led by example as the Supply “Captain” (formally,
Supply Secretary) at First A.M.E. Zion Church (Brooklyn, NY) to train her daughters
(which includes the late Rev. Mary T. Stevens and Ann Smith Reed) that our lives are
not our own, but given to be a blessing to others and a witness for God. Sis. Young is
grateful for the exceptional missionary leading given during her formative years and
as an emerging churchwoman in the Women’s Home and Overseas Missionary.
Because of this influence, she now serves as the Local Parent Body President at Shaw
A.M.E. Zion Church (Corona) and as the District President of the NYC W.H.&O.M.
Society. Ruth also serves on the New York Conference Global Missions Committee,
Mission Education Committee and previously held office as the Episcopal Mission
Education Director of the North Eastern Episcopal District. Ecumenically, this honoree
served as the Brooklyn President of Church Women United (CWU) and later advanced to Area President
(Metropolitan Area) of CWU. She holds life memberships in CWU, National Council of Negro Women, World
Federation of Methodist & Uniting Church Women, Life Members Council and Connectional Lay Council.
Her early work in Zion led her to be elected a Charter Member of the Young Adults in Christian Ministries
(YACM/CED), to be the first recipient of the Outstanding Y.A.M.S. Coordinator Award, and later she was
elected Editor of the Women’s Section, The Missionary Seer (W.H.&O.M.S., 1999-2007). Since 1975 she
