has been a delegate to the Quadrennial Convention of the W.H.&O.M.S., and prayerfully in July 2019 will
serve as a Delegate and on the Resolutions Committee. For the past five quadrennniums, Ruth has been
elected Delegate to the General Conference, thus, giving her the privilege to serve these Administrative
Boards: Commission on Discipline Codification, Compilation Committee, 2020 General Conference Site
Committee, and currently the Connectional Budget Board (CBB). As a community advocate, Ruth become
a member of Brooklyn Fellowship of Churches (Clergy & Lay organization), Brooklyn Congregations
Together, NAACP and an officer of National Action Network (Brooklyn). The Missionaries of Shaw A.M.E.
Zion Church has hosted two General Officers (Sis. Vicki Breaux, Ys Secretary; and Dr. Joy Kennedy, YAMS
Coordinator) and supported all District Outreach. The Local Society of Shaw A.M.E. Zion Church observes
all WH&OMS Anniversaries and in 2018 stoled/pinned 9 members. Of all Ruth’s accomplishments, she is
most proud of her family: Dana C. Jenkins (daughter-the best in the world!), Rose Irene (granddaughter-
an answer to prayer!), and the most loving and finest husband Rev. Dr. Charles W. Young, Pastor of Shaw
AME Zion Church, where both serve with their utmost to the glory of God!
FIRST A.M.E. ZION CHURCH
SANDRA D. SHIPP
Sandra D. Shipp, affectionately known as “Mama Shipp” is a Mooresville,
North Carolina native who has made Brooklyn, NY her home for over 40
years. Sandra forged a career in the greater New York area as an IT Analyst,
Strategist and Executive for over 30 years within various Fortune 500
companies. She is a loving and doting mother of 2 girls and 3 boys. She is a
dedicated grandmother of 7. She has always lived her life with a heart full of
gladness despite any circumstances. Sandra has always admired fashion and
its effects on our culture. As a seamstress, her hidden hobby, she diligently
designed and created one of a kind outfits including the hat. She has always
made sure that “the hat” made a statement. Sandra loves God and church
has always been a major part of her life. She is an active member of the
First African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, in Brooklyn, New York. One of
her priorities in life is to serve the Lord. She is a Deaconess, a member of the Women’s Home and
Overseas Missionary Society; a Life Member; a member of the Cathedral Choir; the North Carolina
Club; the Women’s Ministry and the 2018-2019 Rally Committee. She loves to sing powerful, old
school gospel songs. She engages in mission ministry by serving and never says no when called upon
to lend a hand. She is often found in the kitchen, as cooking and feeding others is her passion. Her
children and grandchildren know that they must share her. Sandra’s motto is” The Lord is the joy and
the strength of my life”. Through her career and life, she will testify, “Can’t nobody do me like
Jesus”, for He will supply every need right on time.

ORRIS UPSHAW GRIMES
Orris Jane Upshaw Grimes was born on May 26th, 1938 in Moultrie, Georgia to
Leonard and Willie Jane Upshaw, the oldest of their two children. She is the
older sister to the late Leonard Upshaw Jr. She attended Spelman College
for two years achieving an Associates in Psychology. She wanted to pursue
a career in nursing so she moved to New York City and began working at
Rockland State Hospital Nursing Home. In 1961, she married Horace J.
Grimes and together they have 3 adult children: Darrick Grimes, Darrell
Grimes, and Wendy C. Grimes Jones. They also have five grandchildren and
five great-grandchildren. After she married, attended Brooklyn Community
College. She then changed careers working at Saks Fifth Avenue for 31
years, first as a Buyer’s Clerical and then Merchandise Manager Assistant
Secretary after leaving the Buyer’s Office. Orris is a longstanding member
of Mother A.M.E Zion Church. She is a member of Class 7 and has served as
local Parent Body President of the Women’s Home and Overseas Missionary Society for over
