DELMA MARSHALL
Delma Marshall, a native of Tarrytown, New York, has been a member of the Varick
Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church, Brooklyn for over 50 years. At Varick, she serves as
Deaconess, President of the Women’s Home & Overseas Missionary Society and a
member of the Christian Education Department. She also serves as the New York City
District Life Members Chairman. Delma earned an Associate Degree in English from
Westchester Community College and a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Brooklyn
College. She worked at the Brooklyn Hospital for over 35 years as a Radiologic
Technologist (quality control) and is currently retired. One of her proudest
achievements was an entry in the National Anthology of Poetry. She is also proud to have co-authored a hymn
which is now included in the A.M.E. Zion Bicentennial Hymnal. Delma has led her local society in the cause of
missions. They sponsor soup & sandwich , pre-thanksgiving dinners and clothing give-aways. Delma is a volunteer
@ Meals-On-Wheels. In her free time, she enjoys Cryptograms, Words with Friends , Jeopardy and Tai Chi. She
also loves traveling, especially Cruising. The recent widow of the Rev. Dr. Calvin B. Marshall, III, Delma resides
in Hempstead N.Y. , where she loves spending time with Edye, Holly and Tino.
Elizabeth wansley
Mother Elizabeth Wansley is a native of Salisbury, North
Carolina. She was born to the late Robert and Mattie Mackie.
Elizabeth is the second of three children. She is a very loving
and dedicated mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.
She is the mother of five children: James, Eric, Kim, Deborah,
and Sandy. James and Eric preceded her in death. Elizabeth
was educated in the public schools of Rowan County, North
Carolina. She graduated from Dunbar High School as
salutatorian of her class. She attended the La-Mae Beauty College in Winston-Salem
North Carolina, graduating with the highest honor of valedictorian. She attended
Livingstone College in Salisbury, North Carolina for two years. As a child, Elizabeth
attended Mt. Hope A.M.E. Zion Church in East Spencer, North Carolina. Upon moving
to New York in the early 60’s, she worked as a beautician; but her love for children and
the calling to teach sent her back to college to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood
Education in 1979 from York College, Jamaica, NY and a Master’s in Education from
Queens College, which afforded her the opportunity to teach Earth Science in Junior
High School (I.S. 292, Brooklyn, NY). She was employed by the City of New York
Board of Education, retiring in 2002. To bury the loss of her son and support her never-
ending love for children, she went back to work in 2006. Elizabeth served as Assistant Educational
Director for the Center of Excellence in Springfield Gardens, New York. She never forgot her upbringing
in church. Upon moving to New York, she joined Calvary A.M.E. Zion Church where she served for 28
years. Again, her love for children brought her to William M. Smith A.M.E. Zion Church, now known as
Smith-Thompson A.M.E. Zion Church under the pastorate of Reverend Dr. Charles W. Young, where she
served as Preacher’s Steward for 24 years. She also has been serving as a member for 24 years as a
Deaconess, Chairman of Stewart Board, Local Director of Christian Education, Sunday School Teacher,
President of Angelic Choir, and Supply Secretary of W.H.&O.M.S. On the District level she served as
