“Yeah! Serves her right for trying to do it by herself. She jumps out right in front of the area and starts blasting like an idiot. Before she gets off three shots everybody is dead.”
“It looks like you made it in good shape,” Seige observed.
“I was wounded trying to drive away,” Tom disclosed. “If I hadn’t been driving, I would be in hell with the rest of them.”
Marcus and Seige turn to look at each other for a moment.
“Here’s the deal,” Seige told Tom. Answer all of our ques- tions, go with us on the mission, do everything you can to help us shut them down, and I will personally do everything within my power for you. One wrong move, and I’ll make sure you catch up with your old team.”
“With those software killers around, Tom volunteered, that’s probably the best deal I’ll get anyway.”
“What software killers?”
“The ones Corin forced me to create on software with my partners in the other rooms.”
“Keep going.”
“Well, since I got his daughter killed, I was supposed to do this special job for him as a reprieve. I had to enlist my friends in the other rooms, who are entirely innocent to assist. Corin called it a sort of good faith thing. He didn’t fool me for a minute. I knew he was going to kill all of us anyway. I was just trying to get all of us out of harm’s way when I thought of you. I almost got killed getting that software to you.”
“Why is Corin creating the killers on software?”
“I think he plans to use them as an invisible enforcement arm to keep his keyops in line.”
“Keyops?” Marcus repeated.
Yeah. That’s what he calls his bosses in each state. Every now and again one of them gets out of line, and Corin has to dust them. He killed one at a meeting not too long ago.
“So how do we take care of these so-called software killers?” Seige pressed.
