APPROACHES TO DEVELOP ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN CONCEPT –

          METAPHOR

          Another important approach in developing
          architectural design concepts is metaphor.

Metaphor can be defined as a comparison between
          two different and unrelated subjects.
In architecture, buildings are not only playing with

the visual image of the form but it plays with the
          hidden meaning of it.

The style is characterized by the use of analogy

and metaphor as the primary inspiration and
directive for design. Certain architects have also
been known to utilize metaphors as a theme

throughout their work such as Le Corbusier with
the open hand motif. An implied comparison is

made between two unlike things that actually have Figure 33 : Sample of concept development
something important in common. Some architects based on metaphor approach
use them to frame and assist in defining a design

problem. When developing a concept based on
metaphor approach it allows abstract concepts to

be understood by comparing them with familiar
          ideas and objects. 39
