Is purification from janabah required to start the fast?Scholars have agreed that one does not have to be free of janabah, as it is by choice to purify oneself from that.A%u2019isha (ra) narrated that the Prophet (pbuh) was at times in a state of janabah due to sexual intercourse and not due to a wet dream, and the dawn broke upon him, but he neither broke the fast nor recompensed. As for Bukhari%u2019s narration stating that, %u201cWhoever wakes up in janabah, there is no fasting for him,%u201d this refers to one who wakes up in a state of janabah due to intercourse and continues the act.Is intention required for every day in the month of Ramadan? The majority (except for Maaliki) state that the intention should be made for each day; fasting each day is an independent act of worship and the validity of a day's fast is not dependent or associated with the validity of another day's fast.According to Maaliki, one intention at the beginning of Ramadan is sufficient; it is permissible to fast the entire month with one intention. What are sunnah acts of fasting?Suhoor (pre-dawn meal):Suhoor can be anything, even if it is just a sip of water. It is best to delay it until the end of the night, right before dawn. The Prophet (pbuh) said, %u201cEat suhoor, for in suhoor, there is a blessing. [Agreed upon]The Prophet (pbuh) said, %u201cMy ummah will remain well so long as they hasten iftar and delay suhoor.%u201d [Ahmad]Hastening iftar:As soon as sunset is observed and before praying Maghreb, it is recommended to break one's fast with an odd number of ripe dates, dried dates, or something sweet. If none of those are available, then one should break the fast with water.Copyright %u00a9 2023 Islamic Association of Raleigh. All rights reserved. 30
