What are sunnah acts of fasting?Suhoor (pre-dawn meal):Suhoor can be anything, even if it is just a sip of water. It is best to delay it until the end of the night, right before dawn.The Prophet (pbuh) said, %u201cEat suhoor, for in suhoor, there is a blessing. [Agreed upon]The Prophet (pbuh) said, %u201cMy ummah will remain well so long as they hasten iftar and delay suhoor.%u201d [Ahmad]Hastening iftar:As soon as sunset is observed and before praying Maghreb, it is recommended to break one's fast with an odd number of ripe dates, dried dates, or something sweet. If none of those are available, then one should break the fast with water. Our Prophet (pbuh) said, %u201cPeople will remain well as long as they hasten their iftar.%u201d [Agreed upon]%u201cOur Prophet (pbuh) used to break his saum (fast) before performing Maghreb prayer with three fresh dates, if there were no fresh dates, he would eat three dried dates, and if there were no dry dates, he would take three sips of water.%u201d [Ahmad, Abu Dawood, Tirmidhi]Is it permissible to fast without suhoor?Yes, it is permissible and valid for one to fast without eating suhoor; however, he/she will have abandoned the sunnah act of observing suhoor.Is it permissible to delay iftar slightly just to be on the safe side?The Sunnah is to hasten the iftar after confirming the sunset.
