Now that you chose your horse, you must be wondering where your team-
mate is going to live. We all wish we could have our horses at home, but the
sad reality is that it is impossible, unless your house is in a barn. Choosing the
place where your horse is going to live is one of the most important decision
you should make, as a big part of your horse’s welfare depends on where he
lives, and you will have to drive to that place almost every day of the week.
When you are looking for places to keep your horse, you will find two types of
equestrian centers: those that have many pastures and allow your horse to be
outside most of the day, and those where having your horse outside all day in a
pasture is not always an option. There are many correct ways to keep your hor-
se (Hill ,2005), so you should always choose a place that fits your lifestyle and
your horse’s needs. If you don’t have much time to get your horse out every
day, then it’s best to choose a barn where your horse can be outside in a pasture
for several hours. Otherwise, if you have time to take your horse out for more
than an hour every day, then you could choose an equestrian center where you
don’t necessarily have to take your horse out to a pasture every day. There are
some significant considerations that you must take into account to find the best
house for your horse. I advise you to always visit the barn by yourself before
taking your horse there to see the facilities, and talk with the barn manager and
other equestrian who have their horses there. In this chapter, you will find the
main points you should take into account to choose the most suitable barn for
your horse and you. At the end, you will find a practical method to choose the
most appropriate barn for your horse and you.
