MARINE SAFETY (14-100)
As an employee of Vulcan Materials Company and working in the
marine line of business, you are responsible for complying with the
division safety and health handbook as well as the following industry
specific rules. Remember, working on or near the water, is a different
environment that presents us with some unique hazards or challenges.
However, when going on shore at one of our facilities, we need to be
aware of the change of environment and the requirements for safety
compliance for each facility.
14-100 Wear your work vest while on a barge, underway or not, and
any other time the potential for falling overboard exist.
14-101 No wrestling or horseplay.
14-102 Do not run on decks of barges, the boat or jump from barge to
barge or from boat to boat. Use a ladder to climb down or up
from a loaded barge to an empty barge. Do not jump.
14-103 Keep ladders in good shape and replace if damaged.
14-104 Make sure all walkways are clear. Clear and clean as
necessary. Keep cargo spillage from blocking walkways. Clean
up grease and oil spots off the deck and ladders.
14-105 Keep loose gear, wires, ropes or tools stowed neatly on the
boat and barges.
14-106 When walking forward or aft on barges, use common sense.
Walk up the middle in multiple barge tows. On single barge
tows, walk inside the cargo box if room permits. Carry a
flashlight at night when on deck.
14-107 Do not go out onto the tow at night unless necessary to do so.
Always notify the wheelhouse if you are going out on the tow.
14-108 Keep all hatch covers or pumpouts dogged down unless in
use.
14-109 Do not stand in the bight of a line.
14-110 Stand clear of lines or wires that have a strain on them. Keep
clear of the stern when on the hawser or cable towline.
14-111 “Watch the Bump” while barges are being made up in tow or
during docking/undocking maneuvers.
14-112 Wear safety goggles or a face shield while chipping, burning,
welding, grinding or scraping.
14-113 Wear dual hearing protection in high noise areas such as the
engine room or when necessary.
