                       Making the Campus Handicapped

                       Accessible, Making Students Aware

                                                     The milestone launch of
                                                     BTJ’s initiative to transform
                                                     the 50+-year-old campus to
                                                     be handicapped accessible
                                                     was marked by the
                                                     installation of the school’s
                                                     first fully-accessible restroom,
the generous gift of Mr. and
                                                     Mrs. Harvey Newman of
                                                     Monsey, NY.
                                                     To raise students’ sensitivity
to the lives of the disabled,
                                                     tenth graders experienced a
                                                     powerful eye-opener as the
first “Accessibility-for-the-Disabled Day” took place on campus.
Carried out by the prize-winning “Access Israel” organization, the
activity enabled students to experience everyday struggles facing
the handicapped while meeting with the people “behind the
disability.” Guy Moshe, a wheelchair-bound double amputee who
directed the seminar, challenged students to try their hand at
navigating wheelchairs across the campus, which they discovered
to be a formidable obstacle course.

In sessions led by an IDF veteran who had lost his sight and a
young man who was deaf from birth, BTJ students entered the
world of the disabled. From stumbling blindfolded to trying to
communicate without words, the boys were skillfully, sensitively
guided to a new level of understanding.
