BTJ Instructor Shlomo Saruk Named
Top Computer Science Teacher in Israel
Boys Town Jerusalem instructor Shlomo Saruk has been named by
the Ministry of Education as Israel’s top Computer Science &
Networking Teacher for 2019. Renowned for his ingenuity,
innovation and devotion to his students, Saruk has initiated some
of the nation’s top computer technology programs during his 37
years at Boys Town Jerusalem’s Leir School of Computer Science.
Shlomo Saruk has defied both the odds and fate itself. The
prizewinning teacher never received a college diploma. His
university studies were abruptly curtailed by grave injuries he
suffered in IDF combat. During the rehabilitation following his 18-
month hospitalization, he returned to Boys Town Jerusalem to work
at odd jobs in the administrative office. And there, Shlomo Saruk
found a haven – and an entirely new world of technology to pioneer.
At that time, Boys Town Jerusalem’s became one of Israel’s first
schools to acquire a computer. Saruk quickly learned the basics of
programming, computerized the school’s administrative
needs, and gradually moved to teaching. After
earning his teaching license, he joined Boys Town
Jerusalem’s faculty in 1980 and began innovating
cutting-edge programs. Thanks to his reputation,
Boys Town Jerusalem was recently tapped by the
Prime Minister’s National Cyber Bureau to
pilot a top-level cyber security course.
Says Israel’s top technology teacher, “My
biggest award is knowing that I’ve helped
my students reach their potential. I see
them advance in the Army, in hi-tech,
and in building their own families in
Israel. I can’t imagine a more gratifying
profession.”
