Dr. Maro Gete Comes Full Circle
In 1991, nine-year-old Maro Gete, his parents and nine brothers
and sisters immigrated to Israel from a small village in Ethiopia.
Maro, who had been a shepherd for most of his childhood, had
never attended school and was totally illiterate. In seventh grade,
Maro began to live and study at Boys Town Jerusalem - and
graduated at the top of his class just five years later! During his
subsequent IDF service, Maro became an officer who bravely led
his troops through grueling Lebanese War battles. Today he is a
well-respected physician at Shaarei Zedek Hospital in Jerusalem,
married and the father of six children.
Recently, Dr. Maro Gete came full circle: He returned to his Boys
Town Jerusalem alma mater to offer words of encouragement to
Ethiopian students in Boys Town Jerusalem’s College of Applied
Engineering. “I owe Boys Town Jerusalem a great deal,” the doctor
declared. “The six years that I spent here were a life-changing
experience for me.”
Speaking softly and confidently to today’s
Boys Town Jerusalem Ethiopian
students, Maro urged them, “Strive to
be the best in every situation.
Regardless of your color or your
socioeconomic level, the minute
you show you are serious, people will
be there to help you. Decide
where you want to be in future,
and let nothing stop you from
getting there. Trust me,
nothing comes easily in life,
but you all have the power
to work hard and achieve
any goal you set.”
