170 CHAPTER 9: Raising Genomics Awareness
Most importantly, the overall environment of these conferences is conductive
to establishing partnerships and collaborations among senior scientists, while
junior delegates can also benefit by interacting with speakers, which may create
possibilities for short-term or even longer term doctoral training or postdoc-
toral opportunities, which may boost their scientific careers. Several collabora-
tions and research consortia have either formed or strengthened as a result of
these conferences, such as in the Balkan and Southeast Asian countries, while
various research internships have been offered to junior participants from
developing countries by academics and group leaders from major academic
centers in Europe and the United States.
These academic activities that foster genomics awareness in patients and the
general public and enrich genomics education of clinicians and biomedical
scientists, either in the form of the Golden Helix conferences or the Golden
