Airport Shifts in Ground Transportation Systems & the TNC Response
IVNirtuallyOall TairpHort oEfficiRals indNicatEed tWhe suSdde.n .m.ode shift has brought about changes to their ground transportation systems. Curb allocations for TNCs have been expanded, often displacing taxis due to the relative number of passengers being picked up.
Latest Updates & News
This progression from taxi to TNCs at MSP shows more clearly the month-by-month decrease for taxis and increase for TNCs. The mode switch to TNCs is fast and still growing. Shared ride service now represents only about 1% of the MSP pickups.

But airport officials are also making attempts to “level the playing field” somewhat with taxis and shared ride van services. Some airports report re-negotiating minimal annual guarantees to reflect the significant loss of market opportunity. SFO for example, is using ground transportation fees to distinguish among vehicle modes. They are using a premium pricing structure for single occupancy vehicles. Single passenger modes such as taxis and TNCs are charged $5.00 per trip to reach the inner curb while shared ride, multiple passenger vans, hotel and parking shuttles are charged a lower $3.60 per trip for access to the central access curb.
Houston’s Hobby Airport officials have also made curbside realignments due to the heavy demand from TNCs. They have moved their shared ride van operator closer to the main baggage arrivals area and moved their off-airport parking operator into the spaces previously occupied by the shared ride van operator – giving them better passenger access.
IAH is currently in the process of opening a Ground Transportation Center that will house taxis, SuperShuttle, TNCs, and buses. According to IAH landside management, the center will have permanent restroom facilities and vending machines. Furthermore, the Houston Airports are looking to implement a ground transportation management system that will include vehicle identification and virtual staging. The intent is to leverage technology to reallocate resources from dispatching and lot management to improving customer service for all ground transportation.
