CROSSING  KNOT


        ossibly  the simplest and the most insecure of all  hitches, this is nevertheless  a useful  one:
     Pwe  use  it all  the time when we  tie a parcel, and it is  also  the basis  of the harness  bend.
     This is a quick and useful way  of'roping off' an enclosure, but because  there  is  no locking
     tuck  to  hold it, tension on the line must be maintained.


                                     ---
        Cross one line over another
      I so  that they  are  at  right
     angles  to  each other.      Bring the  working
                               2  end of the  line
                               down, behind the
                               other line.

                         Take  the working end
                      3  across  the  front of its own
                      standing part.

        Tuck  the
     4 working end
     up and  under the
     other line.
