of knot was tied in the ends of the lashes of a cat o' nine tails, the whip that was used for
flogging in th e British Royal Navy until it was banned in 1948. A less gruesome use is as a
weight in the cords that monks and nuns use to tie their habits: the triple knot was a
symbolic reference to their threefold sacred vows.
