CATEGORY: SUSTAINABLE WAYS OF WORKING
NOMINATOR: Timothy Scherer
SPONSOR: 787
LEADER: 7731
PROFILE:
Describe the situation or event related to the individual's or team's performance.
The team asked for and incorporated feedback from trained spill responders and
improved areas of the training that were viewed as lacking site-specific content or
uninteresting. There are over 70 trained spill responders from 5 different
departments, so making these improvements was difficult as different people have
different perspectives.
We are now better supplied and better trained to safely and efficiently respond to
spills. New spills are reviewed by the team for adherence to training and
suggestions for improvement are offered if appropriate.
This team took a step further by working with the Spill Prevention Team to offer
suggestions on training content to help prevent spills. Spills have decreased
dramatically (roughly 35%) and the rate at which spill responders characterize,
contain and clean up the spill has improved to a 96% compliance rate.
Describe in detail the individual's or team's notable behaviors.
This team was constantly expanding their sphere of influence in terms of making
change where determined to be necessary. The project profile was a continual
work in progress as a result, but after a year's worth of hard work, the spill response
program is much better off. People are well trained, knowledgeable of applicable
standards and procedures, and comfortable with the equipment and personal
protective equipment necessary for such work.
What were the results of the individual’s or team’s behaviors?
The team accomplished many results, some of which include:
1. Worked with the training provider to include site-specific information pertaining to
chemicals, processes, and procedures applicable to GOJO.
2. Created a written assessment to evaluate information retention for those trained.
3. Created site-specific training scenarios based on previous situations.
4. Inventoried current equipment and purchasing new, necessary equipment to
safely and efficiently characterize, contain, and respond to spills.
5. Instituted a best practice by implementing a quarterly refresher training regimen
for the spill responder team.
6. Worked with Learning & Development to include appropriate procedures in
employee learning plans.
