being added to it regularly. In the Yeshivas and the halls
of Jewish learning, Temple knowledge is being empha-
sized, with a view to educating the people in proper Tem-
ple worship. There is a real excitement apparent.
While this interest is very natural in the light of the new
discoveries, it is not limited to mere pride of heritage. Sup-
posing for a moment that a new Temple were actually to
be constructed soon, would the Israeli people, who have not
participated in authentic Temple worship, have a proper
knowledge and appreciation for it?
We suggest that some of this heightened interest and
scholarship has a very practical basis. Temple worship is
exacting and detailed. We suggest that the people are being
educated to understand it properly when the third Jerusa-
lem Temple is ready.
Illustrating more directly the controversy surrounding
this issue is the July, 1972 issue of the "Yanetz" Prayer
Letter. This newsletter, published in Jerusalem by Chris-
tians, quotes in turn the March 21, 1972, issue of the
MaAriv newspaper, which gives an account of a real re-
construction attempt:
Since the 6 Day War we have heard many rumors and
false reports regarding the rebuilding of the Temple in
Jerusalem, that even stones were being cut in America,
all of which is completely untrue. But we now have just
seen the first signs or glimmer of tangible interest by a
group of Israeli Jews who seriously want to have the
Temple rebuilt. We indicate excerpts from the 21 March
72 issue of MaAriv newspaper which we believe is im-
portant in light of our current world situation: "An Otho-
manical Association for the Rebuilding of the Temple Re-
ceives No Permit from the Ministry of the Internal Af-
fairs."
