The Stage Is Set 33

atonement, and the Levitical system of offering sacrifices
to God has no further use. They would have difficulty ac-
cepting the idea of a revived Temple complete with sacri-
                           fices.
However, as the next chapter explains in detail, the
Bible teaches that there will be two future Temples—the
Tribulation Temple, and then Christ's Millennial Temple.
And Temples mean sacrifices (2 Ch 7:12). In the Tribu-
lation Temple, sacrifices will be offered by unbelieving
Israel, and God will apparently allow the worship in His

permissive will. In the Millennial Temple, established by
the Lord Himself, the sacrifices will likely be of a me-
morial nature, commemorating His atoning work on the
                                 8
                           cross.
                           WHAT THE JEWS SAY
But there are Jewish objections. Only the Messiah can
rebuild the Temple, say some Jewish theologians. And He
hasn't come yet, according to their view.
This argument centers around whether the Messiah must
personally gather the Jews and rebuild the Temple and its
worship systems, or whether the idea of this being the
Messianic Age is sufficient grounds to go ahead.
Official rabbinical law presently forbids the Jews to
touch the site. When the Israeli troops overran the site dur-
ing the Six-Day War, the chief rabbi of Jerusalem im-
mediately put up a sign admonishing the Jews to stay out
of the Temple area proper, lest they desecrate the most
                           holy place.
By this thinking, no Orthodox Jewish bricklayer or car-
penter will go beyond the Western Wall, even if the site
were prepared—with the Dome out of the way. There is
