The Man In Love
husband loves his wife the way a man loves his body or himself, he cannot be said to have complied with the demands of the commandment given in scripture for a husband to love his wife. In other words, the only way that a man can successfully comply with the command to love his wife as Christ loved the church is to ‘know’ exactly how Christ loved the church. Without a true understanding of Christ’s love for His church, no husband can successfully love his wife according to the commandment given.
Knowing the love of Christ for the church must be the very first step that a husband takes in his quest toward fulfilling the commandment to love his wife. In fact, this is knowledge that should be in a man’s possession well ahead of finding the woman that he desires to marry and acquiring the status of a husband.
The knowledge of the love of Christ for His church that we refer to here is not just to know that Christ gave Himself for the church or just that He died for the church. Rather it refers to having ‘experiential understanding and insight’ into the love. It is knowledge in the sense of John 8:32 where Jesus said,
And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
