The Man In Love
In asking wives to submit therefore, God was actually asking them to also love their wives! This is exactly the same command that He gave to husbands. Same standards reflected here again. It is important however, to note that the deliberate choice of the word ‘submit’ in scripture as distinct from ‘love’ in laying out the command for wives was to make it clear that the husband is the head of the wife! The use of the word submit in that context emphasizes the fact that there cannot be two captains on the same ship, and all on the ship must of necessity submit to only one captain. The captain rules the ship and all must submit to his leadership. God reflected this clearly when he pronounced disciplinary action on Eve for her role in the disobedience of His command concerning tree of the knowledge of good and evil in the garden of Eden.
To the woman He said: “I will greatly multiply your sorrow and your conception; in pain you shall bring forth children; your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you.”
Genesis 3:16
God had pronounced from the beginning that the husband will rule over the wife, and her desire will be for her husband.
