The Man In Love
commandment is the one that takes its cue from the love that Christ showed to the church.
This commandment therefore, tells us that the love that the woman will benefit from is Christ’s love to His church. It is only the same love that will bring out holiness and perfection in her. It is the one that will make her into what her husband desires her to be. It is the love that will show all men that both husband and wife are Christ’s disciples. It stands to reason therefore, that love that does not take after that showed by Christ to His church will not work or benefit husband and wife.
The scripture says that Christ loved the church and gave Himself for it. That means the love that Christ displayed toward the church was expressed practically by giving Himself for it. There are two perspectives from which we will consider the expression of “gave Himself for it.” This is so that we can appreciate very well what it means for a husband to give himself for his wife just as Christ gave Himself for the church.
