Assignment #2: Commentary essay for the Canadian Journal of Public Health (50%).
Students are strongly advised to discuss their topics/interests with the instructor by September 28
th
th
and finalize their selections by October 5 with a submission of their abstract.
For this assignment, each student will write a commentary essay on a current rural health issue. The
essays will be targeted for publication in the Canadian Journal of Public Health (CJPH), and will
adhere to the parameters set by the journal. Guidelines outlined by the CJPH for a commentary
include:
Maximum word length: 1,500 words, not including abstract, tables/figures, references
Text abstract: 200 words
Maximum number of references: 15
CJPH Commentaries have a reduced number of tables and figures (up to a total combined of
3). Commentaries take a “position” and then bring forth arguments or evidence to support
that position. The text summary gives the reader an idea what the commentary is about.

Students DO NOT have to submit their essay to the journal but are encouraged to do.
Purpose of Assignment
The purpose of this assignment is not a publication per se (an added bonus if it happens!), but rather
to gain experience in a critical discussion and peer review process of a rural health issue for an
th
academic audience. Students are required to submit a draft on October 19 to undergo a blind peer-
review by other students and an instructor. Written feedback will be returned by November 2 .
nd
Students will then be required to revise and submit a final version by December 4 .
