registration, and examination. A total number of 1 636 postgraduate students of which 162 were PhD, 1 101
Masters, and 373 Postgraduate Diploma and Certificate Students were registered in 2018. The breakdown per

The table shows significant growth in postgraduate enrolment in some faculties.
Staff members in the Centre participated in academic activities during the period under review such as
supervision of postgraduate students, revision and improvement of the UNAM postgraduate regulations and
prospectus, and publication of research articles in peer reviewed journals.
Sam Nujoma Marine and Coastal Resources Centre (SANUMARC)
The Sam Nujoma Marine and Coastal Resources Centre is a full-fledged Multidisciplinary research centre of the
University of Namibia. The mandate is to promote research and development activities in the field of Marine
Science, Coastal Resources and other fields of national importance. The Centre is part of the United Nations
University as an operating unit of its Institute for Natural Resources in Africa based in Accra, Ghana. Research
activities are geared towards developing the Fisheries and Agriculture Sectors and complements research and
development efforts of the Ministries of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Agriculture, Water and Forestry, Mines
and Energy, and Environment and Tourism.
The research of the Centre during the period under review was informed by the Centre’s Five-Year Development
Plan. The major research areas were; Aquaculture, Biogeochemistry, Fish and Fisheries Management, Algal
Research, Mushroom Research, Coastal and Desert Agriculture, Renewable Energy, Water Resources, and
Land-Ocean-Atmosphere Interaction.
Staff members during the reporting period continued to engage in community services. Staff members
continued to promote conservation and sustainable utilization of marine and coastal resources, and also policy
