staff in ODeL institutions may be unqualified or lack actual training
on assessment practices for student learning.
Implications: There is a need for training of students to understand
feedback and to engage in dialogue with tutors online to effectively
utilise feedback and gain deeper understanding of academic work. The
implication is that ODeL institutions must attend to the development
of teaching staff by providing in-service training on assessment.
Recommendations: It is recommended that Online Distance e-
learning providers render appropriate support to both students and
tutors to address the needs of online teaching and learning.
Conclusion: Open Distance e-Learning promotes self-directed
learning which encourages student’s responsibility in their own
studies. Therefore, the result of the study shows that online teaching
and learning may create a sense of isolation, high drop out and
ultimate high student withdrawal rates from ODeL institutions.
