Recommendations: The study recommends an analysis of the teacher
training curriculum to determine how this curriculum factors into the
digital training needs of practicing and pre-service teachers. Also, that
technology become part of the teaching and learning process for
pedagogical purposes and not just for sharing information. Further,
that the provision of infrastructure, organization, and institutional
culture be promoted to facilitate the optimal use of technology tools in
schools.
Conclusion: There may be improved quality benefits for teaching and
learning within an established online service provision for schools.

25. Zukani N. M., A birds-eye view of open distance e-learning:
insights into the literature
Background: The adoption of technology-based learning within
higher education is growing rapidly. E-learning services provide an
opportunity for any person to learn anywhere, anytime.
Aim: The study aims to identify opportunities and challenges of
lifelong learners in open distance learning based on published
literature. The main research question driving this desktop study was,
what are the opportunities and challenges in open distance learning in
South African education institutions?
Methodology: This article draws on document analysis to source
challenges and opportunities of online open distance e-learning in
higher education. Furthermore, this study considered a systemic
review process of the implementation of distance learning in higher
education to answer the research question.
Results: The main challenge for students is insufficient feedback on
assignments. This feedback focusses mainly on technical aspects of
language or structural aspects of assignments. Furthermore, academic
