independence. Prior to attainment of independence, Namibia used
Afrikaans as the medium of instruction. The usage of Afrikaans,
however, somehow, has rendered Namibia linguistically and
politically isolated. The government deemed it necessary to adopt
English as the official medium of instruction because of its wider
usage globally.
Aim: The study investigated the teaching challenges and coping
strategies used by English Second Language teachers (ESL) in Senior
Secondary Schools in Ohangwena Region (Namibia).
Methodology: The study used the qualitative research design to
collect data from a sample of 33 ESL teachers currently teaching in
the Senior Secondary Schools in Ohangwena Region. The research
participants were selected using the purposive sampling method.
Recommendations: The study made the recommendations that ESL
teachers should use a variety of teaching resources to teach the subject
effectively according to the requirement of the syllabus. The study
also recommended that schools should reduce teacher learner ratio to
reduce overcrowded classroom. School’s managements should ensure
the introduction of English clubs and reinforce teamwork in schools
among others.

materials and approaches requires extra improvement.
