TEARS OF SUFFERING
Ugyen glanced around and replied, “I have no home as
such. I sleep anywhere I feel comfortable.”
“Meaning?” ask Samphel.
Ugyen squatted on the edge of the gutter. His body
shivered. Every question Samphel asked made him feel
more confused. He had no answers.
And when he didn’t answer, Samphel shot another heart-
rending question. “Where’re your parents?”
Ugyen hung his head and looked at his feet that were
impulsively tapping the ground. He didn’t like to share
his saga. Besides his parents, he hated people who ill-
treated him and spoiled his flourishing youth. He
clenched his fist as anger rekindled in his heart. He was
reluctant to say anything about his parents, but he
realized he wasn’t being honest with a caring and
generous person like Samphel. Otherwise, he knew
nobody cared about his hellish life. While answering
Samphel, he tried to be relaxed, but whenever he tried,
his voice quivered. And his eyes brimmed with tears.
“They passed away.”
Samphel’s heart twitched to the core. The thought about
the separation between the child and parents brought
tears to his eyes. He held his chest and kneeled beside
Ugyen. “Oh, no way!”
