TEARS OF SUFFERING
him like a scrawny puppy wagging its tail. He watched
until Samphel disappeared into the crowd.
At home, Samphel told his mother that he saw the boy
in the town. “Mom, I think I have something to discuss
with you.”
“What is it?” said Mother. “Feel free to ask anything,
dear.”
Samphel scratched his head. He stammered on words.
“Um, can I bring the boy home? You said you needed a
maid to help Au Lham.”
He overheard his mother talking about getting another
maid to help Au Lham. Although Au Lham was a
hardworking maid, she couldn’t complete the chores all
by herself, so his mother helped out at home after office
hours. Ama wanted a female maid, but Samphel kept
insisting on bringing Ugyen home.
“Fine, but we would have to wait for Apa’s decision,” she
said.
A gigantic grin spread across Samphel’s face, and his
eyes sparkled with excitement as he was certain his dad
would consent to his proposition.
When Doctor arrived home in the evening, Ama told him
everything Samphel said. “Now what do you say, Apa?”
