TEARS OF SUFFERING
The pesky bully hung around yet, but Ugyen attended his
class. Though he was mentally and physically tortured, he
didn’t show his post-traumatic stress disorder in the
open, fearing he might be rusticated from the school, but
with each passing day, Ugyen earned admiration. His
friends esteemed him for his decent manners and
intelligence. They envied him but held back unspoken
regards.
During the summer break, he helped Au Lham with the
chores and laundry. All he visited was the vegetable
market with Ama and Au Lham on Sundays. Mostly, he
remained home. When the school reopened, a pleasant
surprise greeted him—he had stood third in the class. He
beamed in surprise and shared the news with his brother,
who later shared it with his Doctor and Ama. Everyone
fluttered their hearts.
“Unbelievable,” said Ama, looking at Ugyen. “You’re a
brilliant boy. Keep it up.”
Ugyen said, “Thanks, Ama.”
“I am going to bear your expenses, but make sure you
work harder, okay?” said Ama.
“I would, Ama.”
Samphel patted his back. “We must complete our studies
and serve the nation.”
