world. Watch a wild animal's response to its
environment. It will react in a more rapt,
effective and concentrated way than we
civilised human beings have been capable of
for millennia. Life can - life does! - go on
without thought. If a surgeon were to open up
your skull and cut the nerve fibres that lead to
the rational speech and thought centres in the
cortex, the rest of your body would still react
to the perceptions transmitted through its five
senses. It’s the body that incorporates the
mechanisms by which we see, hear, taste,
touch and smell the world in which we live.
Without the unconscious, unreasoning flesh
we would have no means of constructing our
images of present reality.
We can’t hide away from the world, nor
should we – we’re an integral part of it, not
separated from it somehow. There is actually
no need to resist it, fight it, or to try to change
it. We can only hope to truly know ourselves
